Essay tips: Evidence, Plagiarism & Referencing - Guide 2022

The average person seldom spends much time perfecting the arguments, the structure, and the style of the essay, and little towards avoiding plagiarism and perfecting referencing. Despite being a significant part of the essay, the evidence too is not given much attention. The essay writer feels an attraction and an obligation to work on the ideas and arguments that he or she has come up with. Though the original input from the writer constitutes most parts of the essay, it is important to focus a bit of attention on other aspects of the essay.

Using Evidence

Evidence is used to back up your ideas and claims in almost every academic essay, but they take center stage in persuasive and critical writing essays. Most of the claims and arguments are not complete without evidence to back them up.

Types of evidence vary with the disciplines, most of the fields use text, quotations, and information from various books, articles, and journals to serve as evidence. While some use statistics, survey findings, and experimental findings as evidence.

Just because a piece of information relates to your argument or claim doesn’t mean you should blindly use it. A good writer always merits evidence for their strength and accuracy before using it in the essay by using any essay writing service

There are many ways to merit the evidence:

  • If the evidence is directly related to the argument you are making. If it talks in general without specifying the topic at hand then it's best to look for other evidence.

  • If another source is supporting your claim or if the results support your argument.

  • The ethos of the evidence: whether it is from an authoritative journal, book, or a person. Or if the methodology and experiment through which the data is collected are of a good standard.

The credentials of the person providing the information or a quote are also important, as they will back your claim only if the speaker is academically equipped to speak about it.

  •  If the evidence is still relevant or if it is outdated. In disciplines such as history and philosophy, the time of publication doesn’t matter that much, while in subjects of science older and dated information is usually not used, as the conclusion might not apply anymore including write essay for me.

Avoiding Plagiarism

Plagiarism is academic theft and it is an act of dishonesty. It should be avoided at all costs, and the source of information should always be mentioned in your essay. Academic dishonesty is also when you use someone else’s work and submit it as your own.

You should know how to paraphrase the source and put the information in your own words. Though,  this doesn’t exempt you from mentioning the source. You can use quotation marks to enclose the exact wording of a source. However, it is advisable to paraphrase the text instead as it demonstrates your understanding of the subject matter and your thinking skills.

When submitting an assignment, you shouldn’t use the work of others or reuse a previously submitted essay. This could lead to severe repercussions for your instructors and the institution of study.

Learning the referencing conventions should be mandatory for every essay writer. You should know how to provide in-text citations, provide footnotes, as well as forming a reference section.

Perfecting References

Always acknowledge the source when using others’ works. This means using and referencing the original source of information, not the information that has already been referenced. It is, thus, better to use the reference section or the bibliography to get to the original source of information and quote that instead, check that at write my paper for me.

There are also many referencing conventions, such as MLA, APA, and Chicago. There are many others available, each should be chosen after consulting your instructor. It is important to be consistent with a style throughout your paper or essay, and not mix the reference styles together.
