Winning the Great War

July 1 marks the centenary of The Battle of the Somme, one of the longest, bloodiest, most pointless battles in history. The appearance of the tank issued in an era of truly industrialized warfare. Kitchener’s Army of enthusiastic volunteers made their debut here; over the next 140 days around the banks of the river Somme, these young men fell by the tens of thousands.

Cartoonist Joe Sacco’s The Great War follows the first day of this battle, a 24 foot-long dawn-to-dusk story of heroism, futility, and death. I’m giving away a copy of Sacco’s book this week—a week in which we celebrate our country’s own hard-won freedoms. Enter the giveaway here.
